Gurgaon::::: A state capital!! Thecity produces almost 99% of all autos in the state. The annual revenue fromsales and purchase of property is about Rs 900 crore, way ahead of othercities. Gurgaon attracts 78% of the Foreign Direct Investment that flows intoHaryana. Nearly 300 of the Fortune 500 companies have a corporate presence inGurgaon. Almost all of Haryana's IT and BPO business resides here. And mostimportantly, it is the home to 20 lakh residents who are the stuff great citiesare built on: they are young, hardworking, educated and enterprising. Aseries of articles in TOI starting today pitching the need to make Gurgaon thenew capital of Haryana. If it ever becomes the capital, maybe the zillions ofmoney as taxes coming from Gurgaon would be used to improve its owninfrastructure as befitting a capital city. True, they break a traffic light or two; but that's only because they have to catch adeadline. The fact is in all of North India, there is no other city, with theexception of Delhi, which comes anywhere near the wealth and resources ofGurgaon. When the first issue of TOI-Gurgaon hit the stands a year ago, the MCGwas not an elected body. Now it is. The Metro had only just started, and now itis difficult to think of a Gurgaon without a Metro link to Delhi. When thisedition first came out, there was no sign of Rapid Metro. Now its progress isall too visible with the Cyber City looking like a war zone, and the oddbusiness visitor bracing for the bazooka. Thecity is changing, but randomly. If the state considers Gurgaon its futurecapital, the planning and development of the city will be done on a moresustainable level, not in this piecemeal fashion. It will be doing justice tothe mega-potential of the city, and will result in generating more revenue forthe state. In the next few days, TOI will feature a series of articleschampioning Gurgaon's right to become the capital of Haryana. The highlights ofthe campaign will include a detailed survey on what the residents feel aboutthe TOI agenda; a lead report focusing on the Gurgaon's strategic advantage incomparison with Chandigarh, or Panchkula (a recent pretender to the throne);interviews with policy makers, and comments from experts.
